Turning Soap Waste Into Opportunity: Erin Zaikis Speaks at Innov8 in Nigeria

Lauren Lewis

Sundara’s Founder, Erin Zaikis, was invited to speak at two innov8 events in Nigeria, first in Lagos, followed by a second event in Abuja. Erin shared Sundara’s journey through the lens of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and social impact.

In a conversation hosted by Tolulope Aina, Head of Ventures & Programs at Innov8 Hub, Erin walked attendees through the early days of Sundara—beginning with a single idea: recycling used hotel soap that would otherwise go to waste. What started as a grassroots initiative has since grown into a social enterprise creating dignified jobs for women and ensuring hygiene access for children living on less than $2 a day.

Erin spoke about Sundara’s funding journey: how the organisation began with a grant, grew through corporate partnerships, and introduced a hotel subscription model to support long-term sustainability. Her reflections offered insight into how Sundara has stayed mission-focused while building a funding structure that supports continued impact.

The event was hosted by Innov8 Hub and Future Africa, in collaboration with CEIP Africa, Bature Brewery, and @Rite on the Beach, and brought together founders, policymakers, and leaders working across sustainability, circular economy, and cleantech sectors.

We’re honoured that Erin had the chance to share Sundara’s story with such a forward-thinking audience, and grateful to Neta Frankel Hanien, Director of Programs at Innov8 Hub, for leading a meaningful and engaging discussion.
